Saw Palmetto เป็นพืชประเภทปาล์มใบเลื่อยชนิดหนึ่ง ชาวยุโรปได้วิจัยและพบว่าาไขมันที่สกัดได้จากผลปาล์มแห้งมีสารประกอบที่เรียกว่า “Cyto-sterol” ซึ่งออกฤทธิ์เหมือนสารต้านแอนโดรเจน หรือสารต้านฮอร์โมนเพศชาย โดยจะสามารถยับยั้งการทำงานของ เอนไซม์ 5-alpha reductase ในการเปลี่ยนฮอร์โมน Testosterone ไปเป็น Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) จึงช่วยยับยั้งการฝ่อของโพรงรากผมจาก DHTจะมีสรรพคุณคล้ายๆ กับยาFinasteride แต่มีข้อดีกว่า Finasteride ตรงที่จะพบว่าไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงระดับฮอร์โมนเทสโทสเตอโรนในร่างกาย จึงไม่ทำให้เกิดปัญหาเกี่ยวกับสมรรถภาพทางเพศ หรือในบางสิ่งตีพิมพ์ของเมืองนอก อาจนำมาใช้ในการเพิ่มสมรรถภาพได้ (increase sex drive)
คำแนะนำการทานเลือกทาน Saw Palmetto

โดยปกติจะแนะนำให้ทาน Finasteride หรือ Saw Palmetto อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง โดยอาจจะเริ่มจาก Finasteride ก่อน หลังจากนั้นประเมินผล (แนะนำเป็นหลังจาก 6 เดือน ขึ้นไป) แล้วค่อยดูเป็นตัว Saw Palmetto ว่าจะเปลี่ยน หรือเพิ่ม
คือถ้าทาน Finasteride แล้วไม่ค่อยได้ผล สามารถใช้ Saw Palmetto ทานเสริมกับ Finasteride โดยทาน Finasteride ทุกวันตามปกติ ส่วน Saw Palmetto อาจทานเป็นวันเว้นวัน (หรือทานทุกวันในกรณีที่ไม่ได้กังวลในเรื่องของสมรรถภาพ) หรืออาจจะตัดสินใจทาน Saw Palmetto ตั้งแต่แรกเลย ในกรณีที่กังวลในเรื่องของสมรรถภาพจากผลข้างเคียงของ Finasteride
